Physiotherapy St. Catharines

Physiotherapy uses rehabilitation to optimize your movement!
The goal is to prevent injury and restore health and wellness.

Why is Physiotherapy important?

Physiotherapy is important because it helps you recover from injuries, manage pain and improve your ability to participate in activities you already enjoy doing or would like to try!

For the majority of people, physiotherapy works really well. It is non-invasive rehabilitation, with minimal risk and highly skilled interventions.

However, your participation and commitment to your recovery journey is invaluable. We develop goals together and create individualized treatment plans as partners to ensure the highest rate of success.

Not only has physiotherapy been shown to help you recover from most conditions, research also suggests that it can be monumental in preventing future injuries.

How physical therapy helps?

Physiotherapists have the trained skills to assess, diagnose and treat your injury!

At CuttingEdge Physical Therapy, a physiotherapist will work with you one-on-one to help achieve the
following goals:

Reduce your pain!
Restore your movement!
Recover from injury!
Prevent future injury!
Optimize health and well-being!
Prevent or prepare for surgery!

What happens during a physiotherapy session?

Each and every session is unique because it is all about you and your specific goals!

In general, here are a few things you can expect:

A physiotherapist will ask you about the reason for your visit and about your current and past medical history.
A physiotherapist will then examine and diagnose your condition.
Once your goals are established we will create an individualized treatment plan to ensure that you recover as quickly as possible.
Movement is one of the keys to success, so expect to get some form of “homework” in the form of exercises tailored to your condition.

Every physiotherapy session at CuttingEdge Physical Therapy is one-on-one with a physiotherapist, in a private treatment room.

How long should a physical therapy session last?

Your one-on-one physiotherapy session typically lasts 30 minutes. Your treatment session may run a little longer depending on which treatment modalities are being utilized.

It may be recommended that you perform therapeutic exercises in our functional gym area before or after your treatment which can extend the length of your physiotherapy session. Generally speaking, we advise people to prepare to be at our clinic for 30-45 minutes, unless told otherwise by your physiotherapist.

Can Physiotherapy help nerve damage?

Absolutely! However, we need to determine the type of nerve damage you are suffering from and the symptoms you are experiencing so we can implement the appropriate treatment plan.

There are two types of nerve damage:

Peripheral neuropathy: damage to the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord,
causing, pain, numbness in weakness usually starting in your hands and feet.
This type of nerve damage can be caused by a number of conditions (i.e. trauma,
diabetes, nutritional disorders).
Central Neuropathy: injuries/lesions in the brain and spinal cord (the central
nervous system)

Our nervous system is a very complex and sophisticated system and different treatment approaches will be tailored to help your unique situation. Some people may present with every symptom associated with nerve damage (i.e. pain, numbness, burning, weakness) while others may only exhibit only minor symptoms(occasional pins in needles).

So how can physiotherapy help?

Well, let’s say you have peripheral neuropathy as a result of an overstretched, compressed or lacerated nerve. A physiotherapist can provide exercises or hands on-treatment to help decrease compression of the nerve, as well as, improve healing conditions for appropriate nerve regeneration. Acupuncture with electrical stimulation can help manage nerve pain and numbness.

How often should I go to physiotherapy?

It all depends! After discussing your goals, your physiotherapist will give you a rough estimate of the frequency and time frame that will be necessary in achieving these goals. In the initial stages of treatment, you may need to see your physiotherapist one to three times a week.

Your physiotherapist will frequently re-evaluate your progress and let you know how often you need to attend in order to achieve optimal results. On average, healing can take anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks. This number can vary, depending on the severity and the length of time you’ve been suffering with the condition.

In some cases, health and full recovery can take several months. It is important to point out that the less compliant you are with regular therapy attendance and exercise, the longer it may take to heal.

How often should I do physio exercises?

In rehabilitation, there is not a one-shoe fits all for therapeutic exercise prescription. Some conditions or injuries may require exercises to be completed 3 to 5 times a day, while others may only need to be a couple times a week. Your physiotherapist will help determine the best exercise frequency for you and your goals.

At CuttingEdge, we also recognize that time constraints and energy levels can play a big impact on exercise compliance. Life can be busy, and we get that. To ensure that you are achieving the most out of your rehabilitation program we will set realistic exercise parameters that suit the needs of your lifestyle.

How quickly does physiotherapy work?

Each person heals at a different rate and therefore individual’s treatment lengths can vary. Some people have pain relief and improved range of motion after the initial session, while others take a few weeks to notice any significant change. Rather than focusing on the time it takes for physiotherapy to work, instead try focusing on setting and achieving your goals.

What treatments do physiotherapists use?

At CuttingEdge, our physiotherapists are skilled and trained in a number of different treatments. Together, you will work with your physiotherapist in determining which treatments are best suited to your rehabilitation needs.

The following are a list of treatment options that are most commonly used:

Soft tissue massage to help ease tense muscles, and improve blood flow.
Joint mobilization to restore movement.
Stretching stiff and tight muscles and joint capsules.
Exercises to strengthen weakened areas.
Cold packs to reduce inflammation.
Heat packs to soothe tired muscles and improve blood flow.
Acupuncture to reduce pain and numbness.
K-Taping to help support injured, tired and weak areas.
Modalities such as TENS machines for pain management.

What type of physiotherapy is best?

The best type of physiotherapy is the type that focuses on you and your goals. Everyone has different perceptions of pain, motivation and healing time-frames.

Physiotherapy that supports these differences through individualized, one-on-one treatment plans will be the most effective. All you need is the desire and motivation to achieve your goals, and your physiotherapist will help you get there.

Should you rest after physiotherapy?

It depends!! One of the main goals of physiotherapy is active rehabilitation. This means getting you moving as soon as possible (without putting you at risk for re-injury). Research shows that in the initial stages of healing, movement is crucial for recovery of injuries and surgeries. However, rest can be equally as important in allowing inflamed and irritated tissue to settle.

So, although movement is important, you can re-injure and re-aggravate by doing too much, too soon. It is also important to remember that the older the problem, the more prone it is to become irritated and the more necessary rest becomes.

At CuttingEdge, we also understand that pain in itself can be exhausting and you may find that you need to rest more frequently. Having body awareness and listening to your body’s needs is an extremely important part of the rehabilitation process. Your physiotherapist will help you find a balance between adequate rest and adequate movement to optimize your recovery.

How much does a physical therapy session cost?

At our clinic, we offer a professional physiotherapy service where each session is one-on-one with an experienced Registered Physiotherapist in a private treatment room. We do not double book, use support staff to carry out treatments or charge premium fees.

The initial physiotherapy sessions are $80 and subsequent treatment sessions are $60.

All physiotherapy services are tax-free. Acupuncture, K-taping and a variety of other treatment modalities can be included in your physiotherapy sessions at no extra cost.

As an approved provider for Extended Health Insurance, WSIB and Ontario AutoInsurers (Motor Vehicle Accidents), some of our patients do not have to pay out of pocket. In order to determine whether your sessions will be covered by your private insurance it is best to either call them to find out your physiotherapy coverage or consult your insurance handbook. If you do have to pay out of pocket, the physiotherapy fees paid directly by a patient are tax free and can be used as medical expenses for income tax purposes.

Our goal at CuttingEdge physiotherapy is to maximize your health care dollar. This means providing you with only the therapy sessions you need and support your supplementary self-managed program at home.
